The Universal Hiring Rule
Any employer will hire any individual as long as the employer is convinced
that the hiring will bring him more value than its cost !
The Perfect CV / Resume' . . . All you need to get it right first time !
Power of non-verbal signals - If an interviewer touches his foot it suggests he likes the applicant !
Curriculum Vitae (CV) - From the Latin, which is "The way your life has run"
Resume’ – From the French, meaning "Summary"
The Perfect CV is the CV that achieves the interview – no more, no less. When the CV
puts your name on the interview short list, it has done its job. First impressions are
vital – and your CV will be the first impression of you for most potential employers.
The CV is the ticket to the Job Race. For the job seeker, a CV is a personal document outlining
pertinent information needed by a prospective employer. The CV is a personal brochure and not
your autobiography.
Make your CV easy to read and ‘user-friendly’. Short sentences have power. So keep it brief. The
active tense is best. Remember you only have 30 seconds to get your message across. Do not
make the reader work.
One of the reasons that CVs fail is because they are far too long. A reasonable Rule of Thumb is
minimum of one page if you are a senior executive, two pages if not, and for everyone four pages
maximum including a technical page if you are in engineering, computing or similar. Use
Reverse Chronological Rule when writing about career
and achievements.
Employers seek to determine from your resume what strengths you have to offer that other
candidates for the same position do not have. To show your strengths, your resume must clearly
point out what you have done in the past that is an indicator of potential success in the future. To
achieve this, your resume must be more than a brief history of your education and work
background.
Accentuate the positive. De-emphasize the negative. If your grades were high, mention them; if
low do not refer to them, but emphasize extra-curricular activities or whatever was a high point
for you.
Lay out your CV to be visually attractive and make sure that the CV looks neat and good either
justified or unjustified on the right. Your CV should be on standard A4 size white paper because
that is what almost every organization uses today at least in Asia. If goes for the paper for the
covering letters and the envelopes as well.
Interviewers eat what you feed them through your CV. As most interviewers are not trained in this
basic management skill, you can expect your CV to form the basic structure of the interview. It is
absolutely paramount that everything on your CV can be verified and is true. If you cannot justify
or speak to any part of your CV, your entire credibility will be lost and your chances of a job offer
will be minimal.
CVs are usually eye-skimmed not read. They are gone through very quickly to gain a short list
pile and a somewhat larger PTD (Polite Turn Down) file. When people skim for information,
because they read from left to right, and top to bottom, the left-hand side of the CV is read with
far more attention and accuracy than information appearing on the right hand side.
Passport No. and such information is irrelevant to be mentioned in the CV. Leave the
information on marital status and children until later and not at the CV stage. Remember the
maxim – only enough information to get you the interview. As the CV will form the basis of the
interview, your CV should contain only that which is positive about you. CVs have a shelf life of at
most about two weeks in the mind of recruiters.
The CV should tell something about your accomplishments. Play up all of those things in your
past in which you stood out.
Corect Speling :- This sub-heading is jarred! It is obvious that everything in the CV has to be
spelt correctly. It is not enough to run the CV through the spell check. This will catch the spelling
errors but not the ‘typos’ and a typo will have the same effect on a selector as a spelling error.
Also be sure, for grammar is correct.
CV Don’ts :-
Do not use jargon
Do not use "I" unless really necessary
Do not use cheap paper
Do not send photocopies of your CV
Do not use abbreviations which may not be understood by the recipients of your CV
Education :- Employers prefer experience, which has more of importance than your
qualifications.
Gimmick CVs :- Do not be tempted to use gimmicks. Keep your CV normal.
Health : - If you have good health mention in the CV. If not omit this information. The best place to
justify your fitness for the job is at the interview, not at the CV stage. If you have an obvious
disability, you should mention it in the CV.
No Jokes Please :- Selection and recruitment is a serious business. Many people try to liven up
the selector’s day by injecting humour into their CVs. Don’t be tempted. Don’t be cute, chatty or
funny.
Photographs :- If you are just ordinary to look at, as most of us are, do not include a photograph
with your CV.
If a photograph is called for, then invest money on this aspect of your job search project. Snaps
clicked for passports and travel cards are not good enough for CVs. Go to a professional portrait
photographer and ask to be photographed in a half-smile. If you normally wear glasses, wear
them for the photograph because you get rates as more intelligent than those who don’t wear
them. Experts tell us that we should wear darker clothes to look more powerful. However, the
basic rule is don’t include a photograph unless you have to and if you must send a photo then
spend money on getting it right.
Recent Jobs Only :- Most employers are mainly interested in what you have been doing recently.
What you did ten years ago is unlikely to make a significant contribution to your next job. Reason
(s) for leaving should be omitted.
References :- Don’t include a reference in your CV as it is obvious that any referee nominated by
the job hunter is bound to be friendly.
SAKE of your Career :- Stands for the 4 different areas of yourself in which a prospective
employer has an interest, namely your : *Skills *Attitudes *Knowledge * Experience.
Salary :- Always, always, always leave salary negotiation as late as possible in the selection
process. Don’t include a figure for expected salary on your CV.
The ‘Golden Decade’ :- We live in a period, which unfortunately and unwisely discriminates on
age. Now if you think that your age is the most important thing, which will commend you to an
employer, then by all means put your date of birth immediately after your name and address. If
you live on the other side of ‘golden decade’ which is 30-40 for men, and 25-35 for women,
better you put information about your age on the back page. But do not omit essential
information as age.
Application Forms :- Whilst this may be frustrating, remember, not everyone gets an application
form. So, your CV has done its job. Secondly, no application form gives the applicant scope or
space to write everything that is appropriate. This means, your CV can still play its important role
in gaining the interview.
How Recruiters Use them :- Employers use application forms rather like the army uses
uniforms – they position everyone. It is easier for recruiters to interview from an application form
because they know where to look for what they want, whether it be experience, personal details
or expertise.
For Further Information . . . Employers will not shortlist you if you return the application form over
which you have mentioned PLEASE SEE CV. You must complete the form : but in doing so you
can write at the bottom of various sections particularly those detailing experience and
achievements FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE
SEE MY CV, which, of course, you have enclosed. (Please do not expect employers to have kept
your previous CV or documentation).
What Next ? Once the CV has been written it must find its way to as many appropriate desks as
possible. It is surprising that so many people spend ages constructing their CV and then don’t
send it to anyone, as if the invitations are supposed to come by some form of osmosis.
Learning to "Pyramid" :- To whom should you send your CV? Here you have to learn to pyramid –
as in pyramid sales. Your CV needs to go to someone who :
1. Can offer you a job
2. Refer you to someone who can offer you a job
3. Can tell you of a job opening
4. Refer you to someone who can suggest a potential job
5. Can give you the name of someone who can do any of the above
There is no limit :- Getting a job is a process of being turned down. Getting an interview is about
telling as many people as possible that you are looking for the next stage in your career. If your
CV stays on your desk at home, so will your career.
Who can give you a job :- It is not Family – they can give you support
Friends – they can may be tell you of openings
Agencies – they can only submit your details on your behalf.
Personnel Departments – they can only short list you
It is only decision-makers in appropriate firms that can give you the job you want.
Most people just write to agencies then sit back and complain that :
a. they have heard nothing
b. agencies and head hunters are hopeless
c. agencies cannot understand your technical expertise
The moral is simple :
Spend most of your energy contacting the most likely employers.
Covering Letter :- First, where possible it should be typed. Most written business
communications are typed :
if your letter is not typed you are signalling quite clearly to your future employer that you are an
outsider trying to get in.
At this stage in the selection process, it is only your letter and CV that contain information about
you.
You do not right hand justify your letter. As with the CV, it gives the impression that this is a
standard document (which, of course, it is) that you have sent off to hundreds of potential
employers (which, of course, you have).
